AUB to Host Media Webinar on Water Scarcity and Regional Stability in North Africa on September 29, 2026

North Africa is currently facing the most severe water crisis in its modern history.

To help the public better understand these vital issues, the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB), in partnership with the United Nations University (UNU-INWEH) and HEC Montréal, will host an online gathering on September 29, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Montreal Time).

The situation on the ground is particularly alarming. Identified as a climate hotspot, North Africa is warming 20% faster than the global average, causing a drastic decline in the freshwater available per person.

This shortage hits agriculture hardest, as the sector absorbs between 83% and 85% of regional water resources—and over 90% in Egypt and Libya. With rainfall expected to drop, crop yields could fall by up to 30% by 2050, threatening food security and potentially displacing up to 19 million people according to the World Bank.

In the face of these challenges, public and private media play a crucial role in informing and raising awareness among citizens. By explaining climate science in simple terms, journalists empower the public while countering misinformation.

This virtual gathering will focus on action-oriented solutions journalism, highlighting concrete innovations such as wastewater recycling, low-carbon desalination, and micro-irrigation systems.

Building on the success of an inaugural session held in June 2026, this second event will feature Dr. Mohammed Mahmoud, a leading United Nations expert on climate and water policy. Accessible online via Zoom, the webinar will bring together journalists, content creators, public decision-makers, and environmental organizations to make media a powerful force for climate resilience.
