African Media to intensify public awareness on Climate Change

The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB)’s Representatives are taking part to the Twinning Workshop between Journalists from Sub-Saharan Africa States, Southeast Asian States and Small Island Developing States.

The workshop is organized by UNESCO in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and runs from the 7th to the 12th October 2019.

Placed under the theme "Getting the message across on Climate Change" the training will not only focus on field works but will also address the level of implementation of the resolutions of the Sendai Framework Agreement.

It should be recalled that the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) is an international document which was adopted by the United Nations Member States between the 14th and the 18th March 2015 at the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in Sendai, Japan.

The Document was later endorsed by the UN General Assembly in June 2015 with the aim of creating a network of local and regional governments to make tremendous efforts for resilient cities and territories. This Framework is based on the 7 Global Targets:

- Reduce mortality

- Reduce affected people

- Reduce economic loss

- Reduce damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services

- Increase countries with national and local DRR Strategies

- Increase International cooperation

- Increase availability and access to multi-hazard early warning system

For the past two years, Africa has witnessed a series of natural disasters which has claimed the lives of thousands of innocents. We have the example of the 2017 land slide, in Sierra Leone which killed more than 500 people and caused the disappearance of close to 800 individuals. Last month, the tropical cyclone, Kenneth and Idai hit Mozambique and killed many. Earlier before, floods claimed the lives of more than a thousand people in the same country, thus obliging the survivals to quite their homes. These are just few among the many examples of natural disasters and other crises caused by an endangered climatic environment. This calls for the responsibility of journalists who have to work hand-in-hand with Governments to raise awareness among the population.

This workshop is therefore presented as an opportunity for fellow African broadcasters and media practitioners to interact and cooperate with their Asian counterparts in an attempt to establish a strong South-South network and enhance the quality and quantity of environmental coverage throughout the Southern Hemisphere.

Participants are called to produce features and items for their various outlets covering conservation, protection, adaptation and risk reduction stories
